Blood Drive

Donor Eligibility

Many have asked recently about whether certain conditions or medications would disqualify someone from being able to donate blood. Here are the answers from Florida Blood Services regarding a few of the most common conditions and medications:

Anemia: Let FBS check your iron. It may be high enough to donate.

Antibiotics: Last dose must be taken 24 hours before donating.

Aspirin: OK to donate, just let us know if it has been within the last 72 hours.

Blood pressure medication: OK to donate.

Cancer: Must wait 1 year from date of last treatment or removal of cancer.

Diabetes: OK to donate if it is diet-controlled or you take oral medications. Insulin injections under 80 units per dose is acceptable if you've had a meal before donating.

Heart Disease/Medication: You may be able to donate. Ask FBS.

Due to space constraints, we can't list all the conditions/medications but will try to include more information on the subject in future issues. You may also visit www.fbsblood.org for a complete list.
